Webforum

The forum has a threaded messaging facility so visitors can leave messages, follow existing "conversations" and start their own message threads.

If you have a Java enabled browser, a second facility enables you to hold on-line "chats" via the typed in world.

If this is your first visit to a discussion forum you may like to read the notes below before entering.

Short guide to the webboard

After completing the logon process you will enter the discussion area. This is divided into 3 panels. The top panel contains the various menu options. The left panel contains the conference and topic titles. The right-hand panel displays the topic discussions for you to read and reply to.

The left-hand title panel works like Windows Explorer (file manager). Each topic, or thread within a topic, can be expanded or contracted by clicking the [+] sign.

To open and read a particular discussion click the topic title. Click the author's name to see his/her profile.

USING THE ON-LINE CONFERENCING BOARD

* Here you will see, on the left hand side of the screen, a list of all conferences to which you are registered, topic threads within those conferences and messages under each topic. A “new” marker is placed against all unread messages. When you click on a topic, you will see on the right hand side of the screen the text of actual messages, which you can read and reply to if you wish.
* Once you have dealt with all messages, it is a good idea to click on the
“Mark all read” button in the menu bar and then click on “Mark all conferences read”. This removes the “new” markers on messages before you leave the conference and ensures when you next log-on you will only see the new messages posted since your last visit..
* Note, in order to use the conference board you must be on-line and have a Java enabled browser. Although it will work on Internet Explorer 3 and Netscape 3, we recommend that you use Internet Explorer 4+, Netscape 4+ or Neoplanet which can be obtained from http://www.neoplanet.com. We do not know how the system operates with Opera but if we receive any information on this browser we will amend
this page accordingly.

RECEIVE ALL MESSAGES FROM THE CONFERENCES TO WHICH YOU ARE REGISTERED BY EMAIL SENT TO YOUR EMAIL INBOX.

* If, in addition to using the on-line conferencing board, you also wish
to use the email facility, you should click on the "More" button in the
menu bar on the conference board, choose the Mailing List menu and then
check the box to receive mail from the conference. The advantage of
this method is that you do not have to read and reply to messages whilst
on-line, which could help reduce your telephone bills. The disadvantage
is that you don’t see all the topic thread (i.e. all the previous
messages in the topic), although you can of course still look at these
by going to the conferencing board whilst on-line.
* For this email option, there are three methods of delivery:
1. each individual message is delivered as a single email
2. once a day the system sends you a digest of all messages posted
within the previous 24 hours
3. a zipped compressed file is emailed to you.
* Whichever method you choose, each message is clearly identified and
offers you two possibilities. The first is to click on a hyperlink to
reply directly to that message via your email client; the second is to
start a completely new messaging thread by clicking the second hyperlink
line.
