CAFE MONDIAL - Communication Applications For Education, Multi-User Open Network Design, Infrastructure and Logistics - is a joint European project funded by the EC within the 4th Framework Telematics Applications Programme. The project aims at setting-up a competence network providing European citizens with affordable teleservices for information, communication, telelearning, and teleworking. Following a user needs analysis a European FirstClass network was set up linking universities, colleges of adult education, private enterprises, and individual users. Furthermore, telematics centres were established providing inexpensive access to state-of-the art information technology to citizens. The network was used to co-author and design multimedia training courses to be later delivered via the network. Parallely, CAFE MONDIAL WWW administration tools were developed by University of Sunderland to enable automatic registration, billing, assessment, accreditation, course and student administration via WWW with links to FirstClass servers. Two courses were developed: "Renewable Energy", authored by Open University, UK with contributions by East Clare Telecottage, Eire and Zukunftswerkstatt, Germany and "Lifestyles and Nutrition" authored by the European Institute of Women's Health, Eire and Norrhäl-singsland Utvecklingscenter, Sweden. The modules were then turned into a multimedia application by Integrated Information Systems ,Greece. The courses are now validated at different European sites. Students receive a CD-ROM, which contains the basic training materials and tasks. To carry out the tasks, to solve issues, and to process the information, students will have to access further databases on WWW and FirstClass servers, and will be moderated by experts via the FirstClass network. Following the results of the verification phase the course modules and the pedagogical design have been optimised and further courses and the WWW tools are being tested with a large user base across Europe. Institutions, colleges, enterprises and universities have joined the CAFE MONDIAL network as franchising partners. |

The CAFE MONDIAL project starting in January 1996 now comes to an end. With 14 partners from six European countries we set up a network linkinguniversities, institutions, enterprises, and individual citizens from allover the world to work together, learn together, communicate and exchangeinformation. We also set up centres mainly in rural areas, where people ofall age groups can come and use the tools of the information societycreatively, with pedagogical support where needed. In the demonstrationphase we had about 1000 users from all over Europe and the USA to study inour virtual college _languages, health care and nutrition, business andengineering courses. We also developed an infrastructure for onlineshopping, consultancy, and conferencing services. |
