This project is concerned with marginalisation within European society through difficulties with communication, culture change, mobility and access to support: migrants; people with hearing, visual or cognitive impairments; older people. Rather than attempting to produce further services in this area, the CANS project intends to redistribute the services that already exist, especially the human resources, so that the simple problems can be resolved automatically or remotely whilst the more complex cases can obtain due attention from professionals. Access to the CANS network includes: support specialists linked in 7 sites (TAS) in 7 countries, human mediation facilities (e.g. translation) through videotelephony over EURO-ISDN, World-Wide-Web information through Internet. The progress of the CANS project is the completion of mini-trials that have ascertained the draft requirements of experts and users. The validation of the applications in 7 demonstrator installations have started to allow service deployment strategies to be developed by the end of the project. |
