Introduction

This document describes the Internet Website established by the Equality Project to act as the primary dissemination medium for the project.

The Website is located at http://www.denhaag.nl/equality/

The Equality Project Website

Global View

The Equality Website utilises Lotus Notes and Lotus Internotes to maintain self-administering dynamic databases of:

  • project documents and links to other relevant information
  • project participant contact details
  • project news
  • Input to these databases is only allowed via the password-protected members only section of the Website, and each entry has a field allowing the Project Manager to ‘publish’ it on the public part of the Website. This is illustrated in the diagram below.

    Picture

    The NEWS Database

This acts as a discussion forum for members and also as a means of releasing press and other information to the public.  Any message stored here can be made public by the Project Manager.

    The DOCUMENTS Database

All project documentation is stored here, including minutes, agendas, review reports and deliverables, as Word 6.0 documents and, in cases, HTML.  The Project Manager can authorise any document to be accessed from the public homepage.

    The CONTACTS Database

Everybody working on Equality, whether they are consortium members, sub contractors or local partners developing demonstrator applications, can enter all their contact details along with whether they wish their details to be made available publicly.  Everybody selects categories according to their involvement in the project, e.g. user, Workpackage leader etc. which enables distribution mailing lists to be generated automatically according to the categories.

    The DEMONSTRATOR Database

Within Workpackage 4 a survey has been undertaken of Local Demonstrator Architectures.  The Website contains an on-line form where local partners enter their demonstrator architecture details.

It is likely that similar surveys within Equality will be conducted on-line.

    Public Homepage

There is a single EQUALITY homepage which contains links to all relevant public material at the project level.

This is hosted by Den Haag at http://www.denhaag.nl/equality/, and includes:

  • Site-wide search
  • Project Summary
  • Press Releases
  • Contacts
  • Demonstrator Architectures
  • External Links
  • Visitor Book
  • Publications
  • Mailing Lists
  • Help
  • The Header and Footer of all of the Equality pages are ‘clickable maps’, enabling users to navigate through the pages easily.  They are stored alongside the project homepage, and called up every time a page is accessed.  This means that they need only be changed once to affect all Equality Webpages.

    Project Members Only Homepage

Members only have access to this section, using a password.  It is located at

    http://www.tag.co.uk/equality/members/

Much of the function of this section is described above.  However this section contains two important additional features:

  • the project toolkit
  • automatically generated distribution mailing lists
  • The Project Toolkit

This contains all the project logos, document templates and guidance on how to use them.  Also included are links to enable members to download standard tools such as ‘Netscape’, ‘WebEdit’ and ‘Paintshop Pro’.

    Mailing Lists

From the contacts database, mailing lists are automatically generated for categories selected by members.

    These include:

  • all partners in Den Haag etc.
  • all technical partners
  • all partners
  • all users
  • all WP2 members etc.
  • all WP leaders
  • etc.
  • all act as single click ‘mailto’ links on the Webpage.

Mailing lists in the public section have similar functionality but are limited to those contact details identified for public release.

    Local Web Pages

All partners are maintaining their own web pages which are accessed through links at the top right hand side of the main Website pages.

Partners are free to add any relevant local information to these pages.

As with the main Website pages, the Header and Footer of all of the pages are ‘clickable maps’, enabling users to navigate through the pages easily.  They are stored alongside the project homepage, and called up every time a page is accessed, but have links to local information in place of the Website search option.  This means that they need only be changed once to affect all Equality Webpages.

    3.1: User Requirements

    Nature of Deliverable:

    Report

    Editor:

    Matti Ojala MD

    Abstract:

The EQUALITY-project aims to improve the position of Europe's less favoured citizens, particularly elderly and disabled people, by the use of information technology. The partners in EQUALITY are the municipal authorities in The Hague, Rome, Livorno, Leeds, Newcastle and Helsinki. The target of D3.1 is to address User Requirements in a broad context: end user, service provider, city and society levels. First experiments of a dynamic proto is also reported.

The essence of the human-machine interface: input, screen information and output as well the physical location of the terminal and access to the telematic systems, are reported as "a standard list of requirements for human machine interface for all". To obtain the scenario of the real life needs for digital services 105 elderly and 131 disabled with significant functional restrictions were interviewed in the six cities. The elderly did not have experiences in the new information technology and in general most of them preferred to live without it. In contrast over 50% of the disabled group regarded the future telematic services "very useful". The complex findings of the large questionnaire is reported e.g. in the form of easy readable tables. In addition some specific issues of end user requirements were discussed in panels of disabled persons.
Interview methodology was also used to reveal expectations of service providers for information technology. 17 service providers in four cities and two experts in Rome were interviewed. This business level impact on EQUALITY is reported briefly. The future options, the infrastructure of services and information networking in the six cities was explored by the Telecities survey accomplished in September 1995. A great challenge for the next step of EQUALITY will be the incorporation of the check lists obtained from the Fundamental Rights of Citizens and professional ethics. The Directive on the Processing of Personnel Data as obligatory and some I.T.-standards as optional requirements are referred also briefly in this report.
Keyword List: telematic applications, user requirements, elderly, disabled, control of human-machine interface, I.T. market survey, municipality, information society, ethico-legal issues, standards, Telecities.

    ABSTRACT

The objective of the EQUALITY project is to improve the quality of life of individuals socially excluded by virtue of age or health related disability. The project will achieve this objective through the use of telematics. The European EQUALITY project team comprises representatives from the cities of The Hague, Rome, Livorno, Leeds, Newcastle and Helsinki. The aim of this work package report is to give a coherent description of the Equality demonstrators  and give an overall view of the different demonstrators, enabling other European members to select telematics services appropriate to their needs and resources.

EQUALITY partners have presented their specifications according to the dictates of  the Checklist. This checklist enables each demonstrator to be describe the organisational elements and user approach, thus allowing a direct comparison of demonstrator to be made. Although different methods are adopted by individual partners, all the demonstrators provide distributed services at the point of need i.e. in the user's home or a communal centre. The range of technologies employed within the project will provide for wide dissemination across Europe; selection can be made from services and technologies targeted at  different target user groups and cost entry points.

Many of the services being developed will be based upon Internet technology and as such can be accessed by individuals who currently have access to the Internet.

Potentially, therefore, if a location has telephone access, it has access to these services.

Keywords: Telematics, disability, disabled, elderly, Windows, Internet, ISDN, TCP/IP, Telecities, Ethernet, Lotus Notes, Cable TV network, Netscape, quality of life.
