TAMCRA PROJECT No. UR 1025

Project Objectives, Summary description and anticipated results

The main issue addressed here is the problem that SMEs usually face when trying to sell their products and services outside their local communities. This problem is a serious handicap for SMEs to grow beyond certain limits. A marketing campaign is not always affordable to everyone and more than often this is translated in how SMEs see their buyers living exclusively in near geographical surroundings.

What TAMCRA attempts is to use available telematics technologies and infrastructures to provide SMEs with other ways to bring commercial information about their products and services to a wider community of potential clients spread all over the European Union. If this initiative reveals itself to be a feasible plan it would mean bigger, healthier and stronger European SMES, more able to compete in the frame of a global economy. With all probability this would mean more wealth and more jobs in the local communities that host those SMES.
In this preliminary stage of the project that will have a duration of ten months TAMCRA will carry out a study on the techno-economic viability of the proposed solution. It consists of an in-depth analysis of user requirements in four sites in Germany (small manufacturing industries in Apenburg), Spain (food-processing factories in Galicia and shoemakers in the Balearic Islands) and Ireland (clothing & textile manufacturers in Donegal county), a definition of functional specifications for the application, and the assessment of the viability of the application.

After the succesful completion of this project the consortium expects to have a further extension of it to continue with the building of a demonstrator prototype, its verification and its validation, and the making of an exploitation plan.

Other Characteristics of the Project

  Users involved
In each major site selected for this project it has been established an association with an user group representing the whole local community of SMEs in the zone. In Letterkenny it is a chamber of commerce, in Galicia and the Balearic Islands two regional development agencies, and a local agency in the case of Apenburg.

  Technologies and/or approach used
To assess the techno-economic viability of the proposed telematics application every currently available technology will be approached (ISDN, IBCN, Videotext, Internet/WWW) and after the study is completed a final recommandation will be made having into account what are the user requirements in the four sites.

  Expected benefits for the citizen
First of all, from the consumer perspective a wider, richer and more diversified offer of products and services in the market will be provided. It will also contribute to create new applications, teleservices and contents for he information highways so often mentioned in the technical press and in this way helping in teir advances.

Expected benefits for the users of the application
These can be divided into citizens/consumers and SMEs/providers that are expected to obtain equally beneficial results of the application as it is told in the points above and below this one.

Expected benefits for the European Industries
This project addresses a particular problem that is more or less common to the whole ensemble of small and medium-sized industries forming the European industrial and economical backbone, that is , to improve existing inadaquate marketing channels for SMEs to be able to reach more distant markets in an efficient way.

  Contribution to EU-policies
Just to mention one, this project will contribute to bring about the vision portrayed in the document “Europe and the global information society. Recommandations to the European Council” by helping to create new markets in Europe’ s information society for SMEs and consumers
.
